My name is Taylor Williams; I will be discussing similarities and differences with the Anti Apartheid movement in South Africa and Racial Injustice in the United States. The Anti Apartheid movement in South Africa occurred from the 1940’s to the 90’s. So for about 50 years, black South Africans fought for racial equality in South Africa. The movement is most highlighted for the Sharpeville massacre and the defiance campaign, which ultimately resulted in the legalization of segregation in South Africa. Racial Injustice in the United States is a seeding problem from 1490 when Christopher Columbus originally colonized America and is a problem that is carried on today. Similar to South Africa, Americans of multiple races specifically perceived African Americans are seeking an equal America. Generally, there have been steps towards racial equality like ending of segregation in 1964 and the Equal Right Amendment, but realistically there is still more to do. Personally, I think some ways people can make change are through non- violent direct action and organization, and to carry this out effectively, one should be hopeful, persistent, and trustworthy.
Racial Injustice was a problem in both South Africa and the United States, and still is today. Apartheid means separateness and it was the separation of races was in South Africa for about fifty years and even before then. In 1951, the Group Areas act was established to racially allocate neighborhoods saving the best, and majority of the land for whites. The separate Amenities act was when public places, parks benches, buildings, were segregated. Racial Justice in America has been fought for many years. Even though many actions have taken place to end the situation, there is still much to be done.
A highly effective strategy to gain power is non violent direct action such as protest, boycotts, and through civil disobedience because your expressing something is wrong and refusing to follow a law that is unjust and drawing attention to the situation. Even though, there were mentions of protest and boycotts to end apartheid, one specific event that was caused because of racial injustice in South Africa was the Defiance campaign of 1952. This was a response of the Voters Bill of 1931. The Black Panthers held several protest even though a more violent approach, eventually lead to small success. Non-violent direct action is effective because you’re verbally communicating a situation that you find unfair which draws attention. With enough attention, whoever is in power can and or will listen to your ideas and cohesively live together.
Another effective strategy to gain power is organizing numerous people as allies that will agree and support with your movement. The Anti Apartheid movement utilized this strategy and gained supporters worldwide. An example of how this created change was in 1964 to 1988, when South Africa wasn’t allowed to participate in the Olympics. Even though they were founded in Oakland California in 1966, The Black Panthers cause gained allies nation wide. Gaining allies can be effective because the quantity of people who abide by your believes becomes the majority, it will be up to the government or position of power to keep the majority satisfied.
Qualities needed to potentially successfully carry on your ideas are hope, trust, communication and persistence. Trust is needed for the anti-apartheid movement when the armed branch of the African National Congress (ANC) destroys buildings and property undergoing the apartheid system because you have to know that this event and the effect that it’s going to have has positive intentions. We also see trust in racial justice in the U.S because we ourselves have to believe that every protest and boycott is going to lead one step closer to the ultimate goal of an equal America.
In the beginning, I didn’t think that racial injustice in America and South Africa was that big of an issue. Studying this topic has made me think a little more about what I could possibly do to contribute to prevent any unnecessary police killings from the audience being targeted. I honestly believe that I am a persistent person because I never give up on a challenging task and make it a priority to be successful.
